SENIOR SYSTEMS ENGINEER · AHEAD

Wes Ellis.

I've spent more than twenty years keeping big Microsoft environments running: the laptops, the identities, the cloud they all talk to, and the scripts holding it together. These days I do that at AHEAD. After hours I build websites, work on G8KEPR, and write fiction and songs.

DAY JOB01

Senior Systems Engineer · AHEAD

I'm on AHEAD's Microsoft managed services team. When a client's Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, or Azure setup goes sideways, the ticket often ends up with us. The good part is figuring out why it broke, not just making the error go away.

FOUNDER02

G8KEPR

My security startup. It protects AI agents, APIs, and MCP servers, the new plumbing most companies haven't figured out how to guard yet. I'm building it on my own.

Career

  1. Current

    Senior Systems Engineer · AHEAD

    Remote

Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, and Azure for enterprise clients. Lots of variety, and it's never boring.

  2. 2019 →

    System Engineer III · CompuCom

    Remote

I looked after more than 8,200 devices and kept them at 95% compliance, which takes more patience than you'd think.

    • Moved the fleet forward to Windows 10 21H2
    • Built out device management with Intune, MEM, PowerShell, and Power BI
    • Owned patching and endpoint protection
    • Automated the repetitive work so people didn't have to do it by hand
  3. 2018 – 2019

    System Engineer · CarMax

    Richmond, VA

I ran the company's Windows 7 to 10 migration: 22,000+ machines in locations across the country.

    • Automated driver and app installs with KACE and PowerShell
    • Kept the departmental migrations on budget
    • Walked a lot of people through the switch
  4. 2014 – 2018

Technical Support Team Lead · General Dynamics (DXC)

    Falls Church, VA

I ran the support team and led the Windows 10 rollout.

    • Administered KACE, Dell NetWorker, and Citrix
  5. 2011 – 2014

Senior Desktop Engineer · General Dynamics (CSC)

    Charlottesville, VA

Servers, networks, and backups. The stuff nobody notices until it breaks.

    • Backups with Arcserve and NetWorker
    • Moved the phones over to Cisco CUCM
    • Kept Kofax and Epicor running
  6. 2007 – 2011

Desktop Field Technician · General Dynamics (CSC)

    Charlottesville, VA

Out in the field, fixing whatever needed fixing that day.

  7. 2004 – 2007

Tech Support Specialist III · GE Fanuc

    Charlottesville, VA

  8. 2002 – 2004

Migration Specialist & Facilities IT Lead · Northrop Grumman

    Charlottesville, VA

Moved people and machines through migrations and kept the facility's IT running.

  9. Late '90s

Low-voltage cabling · Where it started

    Virginia

Pulling cable through ceilings and crawlspaces, long before anybody called it infrastructure. It's where I learned how networks actually get built, one run at a time.
