JAMAL: (typing rapidly, muttering) "Ten Ways to Save Money This Summer." (stops typing) Ten ways to save money. Jesus. I used to write about city council corruption. Now I'm telling people to make coffee at home.
(Phone rings - editor calling)
JAMAL: (answering) Jamal Washington... Yeah, I can have the listicle done by noon... (pause) What do you mean "more SEO-friendly"? (longer pause) AI-optimized headlines? (voice gets flat) Sure. Whatever gets clicks.
(hangs up, stares at screen)
JAMAL: (to himself) "Content creation at scale." That's what they call it now. Scale. Like journalism is manufacturing. Like truth is a commodity.
(pulls up news article on second screen)
JAMAL: (reading) "Local newspaper reduces staff by 60 percent, implements AI writing software." (bitter laugh) At least they didn't say "rightsizing." Progress.
