Part 2 of the thread The shake shelf

THE SHORT VERSION4 points
  • Start with 2 scoops vanilla or cake batter protein and about 1 1/4 cups milk.
  • Cinnamon is what turns a blueberry shake into a blueberry muffin.
  • Carrot cake needs the carrot shredded fine, about 1 teaspoon.
  • Red velvet is just 1 teaspoon cocoa and a drop of red.
THE RECIPE · BAKERY-STYLE PROTEIN SHAKES

Ingredients

The base

Blueberry bread

Blueberry muffin

Carrot cake muffin

Red velvet cupcake

Raspberry coffee cake (zero sugar)

You'll need

  • Blender
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Fine grater (for the carrot cake)

Directions

Every shake

  1. Put the protein powder, milk and that flavor's add-ins in the blender.
  2. Blend on high until smooth and creamy. Add ice last if you want it thicker.
  3. Pour, add the topping, and drink it right away.

Carrot cake muffin

  1. Grate the carrot on the finest side of the grater before it goes in.
  2. Blend a little longer than the others, until no carrot bits are left.
Notes Best fresh; if it has to wait, refrigerate it briefly and re-blend. Any milk works. Roughly 250 to 285 calories and 50 g protein per two-scoop shake, give or take; the four-scoop blueberry cake version is about double.

A lot of what makes a muffin taste like a muffin isn't the muffin. It's cinnamon, vanilla, a bit of fruit and the idea of butter. A cake batter or vanilla protein powder handles the vanilla and the idea of butter, so each of these only needs one or two small additions to land.

Small amounts, big shift

The additions here are tiny on purpose. Half a teaspoon of cinnamon is the whole difference between the blueberry bread and the blueberry muffin. One teaspoon of cocoa plus a drop of red makes red velvet. Go heavier and you get a spice shake or a chocolate shake, not a cupcake. Taste before you add more.

The carrot cake is the one that takes any technique, and it's all about the grater. Use the finest holes you've got so the carrot practically dissolves. Chunky shreds stay chunky, and a surprise piece of carrot through a straw isn't what anyone's after.

Tip

If your powder is already sweet, the zero-sugar raspberry coffee cake doesn't need anything else. Unsweetened milk and sugar-free whipped cream keep it that way.

When you want the real thing

Every one of these has a warm, spoonable cousin in the mug-muffin thread. The Blueberry Bread and Carrot Cake Muffin use the same flavor logic in the microwave, and the Zero Sugar Raspberry Coffee Cake is the baked version of that last shake.

Try this

Frozen blueberries instead of fresh give you a colder, thicker shake without watering it down with ice.
